Growth Habit: medium (4 x 4 feet)
USDA Zone: 7b
Exposure: filtered to full sun
Growing Conditions: evenly moist, well drained acidic soils
Primary Color: red
Bloom Time: early-season
Comments: Dark, blood-red flowers on top of long slender leaves which are heavily coated with stiff bristles. Midrib of the leaves is coated with a thick layer of indumentum. I've had a long history with this plant as I first saw it in Ted Van Veen's book, Rhododendrons in America, in the late 60's. It remains one of my favorites.
