Ornamental Grasses have become an important element in the American garden. Their immense variety of colors, textures and heights add beauty, grace, structure and flowing motion to the landscape. They excel in perennial borders, containers, beside ponds, mixed with conifers and heathers and are absolutely unbeatable when backlit by late afternoon sun!
Hostas have their origin in Japan, Korea, China and Russia. They are hardy, bold-textured, and display striking foliage in shades of green, yellow, gold, gray-blue and variegated combinations. Hostas perform best in moist, humus well-drained soil. They like morning sun, but prefer filtered light in the heat of the day.
Astilbes, with their fern-like foliage and feathery flower plumes are great companions to ferns and hostas in shade gardens. Flowers bloom for several weeks in shades of red, white and pink and the dried plumes remain attractive for months after the color fades. Astilbes also make ideal container plants. Like hostas, they can handle some morning sun.
